Often
used as a term for spyware, this term is
preferred by makers of software that includes
ad-serving mechanisms. Adware is advertising-supported
software that displays pop-up advertisements
whenever the program is running. In addition
to the annoyance of pop-up ads, adware can
install components on a computer to gather
a user’s personal information.
Browser
Helper Object
A
small program that runs automatically every
time an Internet browser is launched. Generally,
a BHO is placed on the system by another
software program and is typically installed
by toolbar accessories. A BHO can track usage
data and collect any information displayed
on the Internet.
Dialer
Once

modem from the designated Internet service
provider and connect to another phone number

Network
Management
Software
that can remotely monitor routers, switches,
servers, and other network activity. An example
would be LANSurveyor from Neon Software.
Remote Administration
Some
Trojans, called RATs (Remote Administration
Tools), allow attackers to gain unrestricted
access to a computer whenever the user is
online. The attacker can perform activities
such as file transfers, adding/deleting files,
and controlling the mouse and keyboard. These
tools may also be used legitimately in a
network environment. See Trojans, Keyloggers.
Trojan
A
Trojan is a destructive program, deceptively
disguised a benign application, that is
designed to damage operating systems, software,
or the hard drive causing loss of information
or even the destruction of the user’s
system. See Remote Administration.
Virus
A
malicious, self-replicating program that
installs without the user’s knowledge
or consent and consumes memory, eventually
crashing the system.
Worm
A
computer program that replicates itself and
is self-propagating. Worms, unlike viruses,
are meant to spawn in network environments.
Worms usually are designed to slow down a
network or even crash it.
